Practiced flash photography on different settings and conditions.
Here is Ah Ma:

The above is done with a bright sunlit background. Ah Ma would just be a silhouette without flash to be used as fill-in. Making use of the ceiling, the flash is bounced directly above and spread out over Ah Ma to create a natural and softer lighting condition.
This is Father:

As seen here, using the wireless ability of the camera and flash (in this case: D70 and SB600), lighting can be manipulated from a different direction to create a different mood and feel. Here, I used the flash diffused and pointed straight up at his face from the bottom right, where he is facing in the photo.
He was watching a programme on the tele and, hopefully, the lighting can give a sense of what he was doing when this moment in time was frozen.
The black and white conversion should give a clearer picture of the direction, strength and spread of the light, and the play with shadows.
